What is a Pre-Departure Briefing?

A Pre-Departure Briefing is a comprehensive orientation session conducted by our expert counsellors at Sunmerges Educational Service before you board your flight to study abroad. It covers everything from travel documents and financial preparedness to accommodation, health cover, cultural adaptation, and airport arrival.

Moving to another country — especially at a young age — can be daunting. We understand that. Our goal is to ensure that every student we counsel walks into their new life abroad fully informed, well-prepared, and genuinely confident, so there are no surprises on day one.

What We Cover in Your Briefing

A structured, 7-topic session that prepares you for every aspect of life abroad

1

Document Verification & Travel Readiness

We do a final check of all your critical documents before you depart to ensure nothing is missing or expired.

  • Valid passport (at least 6 months validity beyond program end)
  • Student visa stamp / BRP card details
  • University offer letter, CAS / I-20 / CoE
  • Flight tickets and travel itinerary
  • Emergency contact list (university, counsellor, family)
📄 We review every document before you fly
2

Financial Preparedness

Arriving abroad without proper financial planning is one of the most common student challenges. We help you prepare:

  • How much cash / forex to carry on arrival
  • Setting up an international bank account (Wise, Revolut, local bank options)
  • Understanding tuition fee payment schedules
  • Monthly budget planning for rent, food, transport & utilities
  • Avoiding common financial traps and scams targeting new students
💳 Recommended: carry £500–£1000 equivalent on arrival
3

Accommodation Orientation

Our team works with you and your family to ensure your accommodation is confirmed, safe, and ready before arrival. We cover all types of student housing:

  • On-campus halls and dormitories (university-managed)
  • Host family / paying guest (PG) stay
  • Private apartments — shared or single occupancy
  • Temporary accommodation for the first few nights if needed
🏠 Confirm accommodation before you fly — don't arrive without it
4

Health Cover & Medical Readiness

Understanding your health insurance before you arrive is essential — especially for Australia, UK, and other countries where it is mandatory.

  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) — mandatory for Australia
  • NHS registration process — for UK students
  • Travel insurance and emergency medical coverage
  • Carrying prescription medications and documentation
  • Registering with a GP / doctor upon arrival
🏥 OSHC must be purchased before your visa is granted in Australia
5

Airport Arrival & Pickup Coordination

We arrange and coordinate airport pickup for students arriving in their destination country. When you pre-book with us, a professional driver will be at the airport with a name board — ready to help with your luggage and take you safely to your accommodation.

  • Meet & Greet service with name board at arrivals
  • Private taxis or minibus for groups
  • Driver briefed on your university and accommodation address
  • Available for Australia, UK & other key destinations
🚗 Submit pickup request at least 72 hours before arrival
6

Cultural Adaptation & Student Life

Adjusting to a new country goes beyond logistics. We prepare students for the cultural shift, social environment, and everyday life expectations in their destination country.

  • Cultural norms, etiquette, and local customs
  • Public transport systems (Oyster card, Opal card, etc.)
  • Grocery shopping, cooking, and managing daily life
  • Part-time work rights and how to find legal employment
  • Student support services on campus (counselling, helplines)
🌍 Culture shock is normal — we help you prepare for it
7

University Enrolment & First Week Guidance

We walk you through exactly what to expect in your first week at university — so you're not confused or overwhelmed when you arrive.

  • Student ID and library card registration
  • Orientation week schedule and what to attend
  • Course enrollment and timetable confirmation
  • Contacting your academic advisor / personal tutor
  • Joining student societies and building a social network
🎓 Orientation week attendance is highly recommended
